Police Seize Rs 78.5 Lakh in UP and Rs 1.9–2 Crore in Hyderabad, Probe Banned-Notes Racket

Investigators now trace the money trail, with suspects’ claimed RBI links under verification.

Overview

  • Hapur’s Kotwali police and the district SWAT team arrested six men and recovered demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes worth Rs 78.5 lakh along with six phones, a pistol and cartridges.
  • Hyderabad’s East Zone Task Force detained four people in Narayanguda and seized about Rs 1.9–2 crore in old currency that was reportedly gathered for an exchange deal near a theatre and the Water Board office.
  • Police say the Hapur group used Telegram and personal networks to solicit holders of old notes with offers of commission or new currency, and at times allegedly cheated clients by underpaying and then cutting contact.
  • Officials are examining forward and backward linkages that suggest a larger network operating across cities, including Bengaluru and Chennai, and are tracking both the sender and intended receiver of the seized cash.
  • Authorities reiterated that possession or attempted exchange of these demonetised denominations remains a punishable offence and warned of strict action against participants in such deals.
