Police Seize More Than 200 Historical Documents Linked to San Martín

Forensic experts are examining the lot to confirm authenticity, establish provenance and determine whether Argentina’s archive law prevents their commercial sale.

Overview

  • The Policía Federal Argentina recovered a lot of more than 200 documents that had been offered for sale by a Recoleta auction house with a US$100,000 base price, following evidence gathered by investigators.
  • The operation followed preventive monitoring by the PFA’s Departamento Protección del Patrimonio Cultural that detected the public online listing and prompted judicial action.
  • Juzgado Nacional en lo Criminal y Correccional Federal N.º 4 under Judge Ariel Lijo ordered the presentation and seizure, and the materials were moved to a police facility as depósito judicial for safekeeping.
  • Recovered items include letters, photographs, books and official documents linked to José de San Martín, Juan Manuel de Rosas, Juan Martín de Pueyrredón, Carlos María de Alvear and Gregorio Aráoz de Lamadrid.
  • Specialists will carry out pericias to verify authenticity, trace legal provenance and assess application of Law N.º 15.930; media claims of previously unknown San Martín letters remain unconfirmed pending those tests.
