Police Say Tokyo Boss’s Killing Was Planned as Suspect Faces Prosecutors

Investigators cite security footage alongside discarded bloodstained items as evidence of planning.

Overview

  • Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested Masahiro Yamanaka, 45, on suspicion of fatally stabbing company president Akihiro Kawashima, 44, in a condominium in Ota Ward.
  • Yamanaka, the firm’s sales manager and Kawashima’s former high school classmate, was sent to prosecutors on Saturday.
  • Security footage shows Yamanaka entering the building at about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday and leaving around 7:30 p.m., with the killing estimated between 6:40 p.m. and 11:30 a.m. the next day.
  • Police say he changed clothes and waited roughly an hour at the residence, and they recovered a second outfit and a knife stained with blood in nearby dumpsters.
  • During questioning, he admitted stabbing but denied intent to kill, saying he brought a knife from home to intimidate after grievances over the boss’s attitude.
