Police Say Manchester Synagogue Attacker Pledged Allegiance to Islamic State in 999 Call

An independent watchdog is reviewing whether police gunfire caused a worshipper's death.

Overview

  • Counter Terrorism Policing North West confirmed the attacker phoned 999 during the assault to claim allegiance to Islamic State and said the case remains a live terrorism investigation.
  • Two worshippers, Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, were killed; Daulby is believed to have been fatally struck by police gunfire as congregants blocked the doors, and three other men suffered serious injuries.
  • Jihad Al‑Shamie, 35, was shot dead by armed officers after ramming pedestrians, stabbing victims, and trying to force entry while carrying two knives and wearing a non‑viable hoax device.
  • The Independent Office for Police Conduct says only police fired at the scene and is examining the use of lethal force, including whether officers caused or contributed to Daulby’s death.
  • Police say six people were arrested for questioning, two were released without charge and further releases were scheduled, while inquiries continue into Al‑Shamie’s motivation, background, and any external links.
