Police Say Gunfire Likely Killed One Victim in Manchester Synagogue Terror Attack

A provisional forensic finding has refocused part of the investigation on officers’ use of force.

Overview

  • Greater Manchester Police said a preliminary exam indicates one civilian was fatally struck by police bullets and another person was wounded by police fire during the response.
  • The attacker, identified as Jihad Al‑Shamie, 35, was shot dead by armed officers roughly seven minutes after the first 999 call outside Heaton Park synagogue in Crumpsall during Yom Kippur.
  • Victims were named as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, with three others remaining hospitalized in serious condition as congregants and security prevented the assailant from entering the building.
  • Counter‑terror policing declared a PLATO incident, bomb teams confirmed the suspect’s vest was a fake device, and conducted a controlled detonation on the suspect’s vehicle.
  • Investigators have made multiple arrests and carried out searches, including in Prestwich, as inquiries continue into motive, any associates and the exact circumstances of the police gunfire.
