Police Roll Out Stop-and-Search and Dispersal Powers Across UK for Bonfire Night

Police cite recent fireworks disorder, using time-limited powers with visible patrols to reduce risk to the public.

Overview

  • Greater Manchester Police enforced Section 60 and 60AA in Gorton and Abbey Hey from 9am Wednesday to 3am Thursday, with officers able to require removal of face coverings and conduct stop and search.
  • West Midlands Police activated Section 60 in parts of Birmingham from 3pm to 6am after dangerous firework incidents in the Bagot Street area, reporting several arrests and warning of further enforcement.
  • Merseyside Police established 11 dispersal zones spanning Knowsley, Sefton, Southport and Formby, with return breaches arrestable and orders running into November 6 and 7 depending on location.
  • Nottinghamshire Police issued a Beeston dispersal order allowing officers to move people on and escort youths home, while Bolton’s Halliwell area received an evening order in response to reported disorder.
  • Police Scotland applied Section 60 powers across multiple Edinburgh neighborhoods from 3pm, as officers elsewhere managed unregulated bonfires and reports of fireworks fired into roads in Gorton, Smallbridge and Halliwell, alongside public appeals for information.
