- Witnesses confronted the man, one wielding a golf club, and a passing driver boxed in the Mercedes to prevent it being driven away.
- The man ran to a waiting white Nissan Navara with registration 1OL9CF that was last seen heading south on Cremorne Street.
- The Mercedes owner was unharmed, and police believe a Good Samaritan sustained a facial injury during the scuffle.
- Detectives released CCTV and still images, described the man as Pacific Islander/Māori appearance in his mid to late 20s about 183cm with a solid build, and urged anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
