Overview

  • On August 6 around 7:30 p.m., a dark gray 2018 Buick Encore with Illinois plate CQ19696 struck and dragged a pedestrian at West Estes Avenue and North Greenview Avenue, and the victim was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. from head trauma and other injuries.
  • The Chicago Police Department published surveillance stills of the SUV and asked anyone with information to contact the Major Accident Investigation Unit at 312-745-4521 or submit an anonymous tip online using reference RD# JJ364919.
  • Officers note that to press hit-and-run charges they must prove who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash, not just who owns or is registered to it.
  • This incident follows a summer surge of fatal hit-and-runs in Chicago neighborhoods including North Lawndale, Englewood and the Near West Side where investigations have stalled for lack of driver identification.
  • Police and community leaders say public engagement and shared video footage are critical to overcoming evidence gaps in hit-and-run probes under the city’s Vision Zero traffic-safety initiative.
