Police Recover ₹40 Lakh Stolen on Indore–Daund Express, Arrest Habitual Offender

A CCTV-led operation by the Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police, Local Crime Branch secured the arrest in Chiplun within 48 hours with all valuables returned

Overview

  • On June 20, a 73-year-old passenger on the Indore–Daund Express discovered her bag containing diamond and gold jewellery and ₹50,000 in cash was missing as the train approached Lonavala.
  • The woman alerted the Indian Railways helpline 139 and an FIR was filed at the Lonavala Government Railway Police station.
  • Joint teams from the Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police and Local Crime Branch scanned CCTV from 18 stations along the route to identify a suspicious individual.
  • Authorities identified the suspect as habitual offender Mahesh Arun Ghag alias Vicky and arrested him in Chiplun, Maharashtra, within 48 hours of the crime.
  • Officers recovered roughly ₹40 lakh in valuables from his Chembur residence and returned the stolen items to the victim’s family.
