Overview
- On August 30 a group posing as police intercepted a vehicle in Trujillo, kidnapped gold merchant Jenss Marty Lara Tantaquilla and left four people in the vehicle dead.
- On September 9 police and the Public Ministry used the original vehicle, recovered police-like uniforms and staged reenactments and anthropometric peritajes at the scene to map positions and the sequence of events.
- At least 12 people have been detained in the probe and the Dirección de Criminalística reported five detainees tested positive for gunshot residue in atomic-absorption analyses.
- Prosecutors have warned that test results and reenactments are being consolidated and do not yet suffice to charge individuals, and the victims’ relatives have protested to demand faster, clearer answers about how Lara was freed.
- Investigators are examining whether the attack links to mining-related criminal networks and the use of police-impersonation tactics, a dynamic that could push rural violence into urban areas and increase scrutiny of police intelligence.
