Police Reassert Control in Leh as Curfew Follows Deadly Ladakh Protests

The unrest grew from calls for Ladakh statehood championed by hunger-striking activist Sonam Wangchuk.

Overview

  • At least five protesters were reported killed and about 100 people injured after clashes in the city, according to police and hospital accounts.
  • Authorities imposed a curfew in parts of Leh and banned gatherings of four or more as security forces patrolled largely deserted streets.
  • Police said they used batons and tear gas before opening fire in "legitimate defence," a stance echoed by the Home Affairs Ministry.
  • Protesters injured more than 30 officers and set ablaze the local BJP office and a police vehicle, officials said.
  • Doctors at Leh's main hospital reported six surgeries, including for three gunshot wounds, as treatment continued for dozens of injured.
