Police Probe Winterswijk House Blast and Suspected Arson in Groot-Ammers as Storm Amy Fells Trees

Specialist teams are examining the two home incidents while concurrent storm damage and crashes taxed regional emergency services.

Overview

  • The Team Explosieven Veiligheid was deployed after an explosion at a Winterswijk home around 00:15, the area was cordoned off, no injuries were reported, and police appealed for witnesses.
  • A late-night fire in Groot-Ammers at an address previously hit by a June explosion is under investigation with arson not ruled out, and two homes were declared uninhabitable.
  • KNMI issued a code yellow for Utrecht with gusts up to 75 km/h as Storm Amy brought down trees and caused flooding in parts of the Rijnmond region, including submerged kades in Vlaardingen.
  • On the N33 near Appingedam, a single-vehicle crash left the driver trapped and seriously injured, and the road between Appingedam and Holwierde was closed during the rescue operation.
  • In Rotterdam-Hoogvliet, a man robbed a tankstation around 21:00 after threatening staff with a knife, and in Utrecht a man deliberately toppled a Jesus statue inside the Majellakerk; both cases are under police investigation.
