Police Probe Valencia Lot Explosion That Killed Drug Addict

Homicide detectives have taken charge of a forensic-led inquiry after the explosion that engulfed the victim in flames.

  • The 50-year-old victim was a known drug addict with multiple criminal convictions and lingering injuries from a brutal beating received years earlier.
  • At around 15:30 on June 19, a witness heard a small blast in a vacant lot between Avenida de Tarongers and the former San Juan de Dios hospital and called emergency services upon seeing the man on fire.
  • Police Local and Policía Nacional officers discovered the victim’s body and identified two other addicts nearby who were taken in for questioning as witnesses.
  • One of the individuals detained had been released from prison weeks earlier and is suspected of setting several garbage container fires in the area.
  • The Policía Nacional’s Homicide Group has assumed control of the case and deployed forensic teams to scour the scene for evidence.
