Police Officer Killed in Pennsylvania Hospital Hostage Situation

A gunman targeted the ICU at UPMC Memorial Hospital, leaving one officer dead and five others injured before being fatally shot by police.

The gunman, identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered UPMC Memorial Hospital's ICU armed with a handgun and zip ties, taking staff members hostage.
Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department was killed in the line of duty during the confrontation, while two other officers were injured and are in stable condition.
Three hospital staff members, including a doctor, nurse, and custodian, were wounded, and a fourth staff member was injured in a fall; all are reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities confirmed that no patients were harmed during the incident and that the hospital is now secure.
Investigators believe the attack was premeditated, as the gunman had prior contact with the ICU earlier in the week for a medical purpose involving another individual.
