Overview
- West Yorkshire Police confirmed John Harkin, 74, died after a silver Range Rover Evoque entered the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Hirst Mill Crescent on Sunday evening, December 7.
- Officers entered the water and PC Everett pulled Mr Harkin to the towpath, where CPR was performed before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
- Mr Harkin’s family paid tribute to him as a keen sportsman and thanked PC Everett for an extremely brave rescue attempt.
- The Major Collision Enquiry Team is investigating and asks anyone who saw Mr Harkin or the vehicle that day to contact police quoting reference 13250702242.
- Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team reported a patrol car was struck by a brick about 30 minutes before the canal response, and inquiries into that incident continue.
