Police Move to Clear Bassens Fuel Depot Blockade Near Bordeaux

The operation seeks to restore regional fuel supplies threatened by a three-day occupation of the DPA site.

Overview

  • Law enforcement began the deblocking at 8:30 a.m., led by the Gironde departmental gendarmerie and the interdepartmental national police with CRS units.
  • The depot had been obstructed since Wednesday night by roughly 40 Coordination rurale members with about 30 farm machines or trucks and around 40 cars, with some 50 protesters staying overnight.
  • The prefecture said reopening is essential to resupply service stations and to protect the local economy, business activity, daily life and emergency services.
  • Journalists reported tense confrontations, brief scuffles and the use of tear gas as some farmers attempted to slow the clearance.
  • The move comes after a €300 million agriculture package including doubled compensation for bovine nodular dermatitis and a call by the union’s national leader for protesters to leave Paris, though local sections continued actions and a separate blockade in the Nord was lifted Friday night.
