Police Mount Statewide School-Start Traffic Checks in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Authorities cite last year’s child crash figures to justify targeted checks on speeding plus child restraints.

Overview

  • Officers conducted compliance checks at many of the state’s 562 schools as classes began on Monday.
  • On Rügen, police reported alarmingly many vehicles in which children were not properly secured.
  • Roughly 165,000 students started the new school year in the state, including about 14,300 first graders.
  • Last year 415 children aged six to 14 were involved in traffic crashes statewide, with 60 incidents on school routes causing eight serious and 56 minor injuries.
  • Excessive speed remains the leading accident cause, and authorities plan intensified stationary and mobile controls across the state throughout September.
