Police: Manchester Synagogue Attacker Pledged Islamic State Allegiance in 999 Call

Police say the call underpins their assessment of Islamist influence during continuing inquiries.

Overview

  • Counter Terrorism Policing North West confirmed Jihad Al‑Shamie phoned 999 during the Oct. 2 attack and claimed he had killed two Jews in the name of Islamic State.
  • Two worshippers, Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, were killed; police say Daulby was likely hit by officers’ gunfire, which is under IOPC investigation.
  • Al‑Shamie rammed pedestrians, stabbed people, wore a hoax device, and tried to force entry on Yom Kippur before armed officers shot him dead outside the synagogue.
  • Detectives say they are more confident he was influenced by extreme Islamist ideology but have found no operational links to Islamic State or other proscribed groups.
  • Six people were arrested under terrorism laws after the attack, with several released without charge, and police note Al‑Shamie was on bail for an alleged rape and was not known to Prevent or counter‑terror units.
