Police Make Multiple Arrests in Multi‑State UPI Fraud Rings

Coordinated raids uncovered forged IDs and digital evidence that investigators say reveal a steady pattern of impersonation and mule accounts used to siphon and conceal stolen payments.

Overview

  • Delhi Cyber Police arrested three people on Tuesday after tracing Rs 5.67 lakh that was siphoned from a complainant’s bank account through unauthorised UPI transfers and routed via mule accounts.
  • Investigators in Delhi relied on bank records, UPI transaction trails and IP logs to map the money flow and identified account operators named by police as Adil Salmani and Maninder Singh.
  • The Odisha Crime Branch arrested three more suspects in two separate cases that together totalled Rs 2.78 crore, one of which involved fraudsters impersonating Mumbai cybercrime officers to extort Rs 1.38 crore.
  • Police seized forged Aadhaar and PAN cards, mobile phones, SIMs, bank documents and a vehicle and said suspects created fake identities and opened multiple accounts across banks to layer and move proceeds.
  • The arrests underline how social engineering, impersonation and 'mule' networks exploit UPI and remote banking access and signal that investigators will pursue wider interstate links and asset tracing to recover funds.
