Police Limit Azad Maidan Protest to 5,000 as Jarange Plans Indefinite Fast in Mumbai on Friday

The Bombay High Court blocked a march to the city, prompting strict conditions on the demonstration.

Overview

  • Over 1,500 Mumbai Police personnel and units from CRPF, RAF, CISF and the state security force have been deployed around Azad Maidan, where officials also visited to review arrangements.
  • Permission covers one day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with no morcha, only five vehicles allowed for the leadership, and crowding controlled under festival-season rules.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis rejected classifying Marathas as OBC Kunbis, said the existing Maratha reservation remains legally valid, and pledged to prevent harm to OBC interests.
  • The state reconstituted a sub-committee, extended the Justice Shinde panel by six months, and said Kunbi-certificate verification and issuance processes have begun, with ministers offering talks in Mumbai.
  • OBC leaders announced a chain hunger strike in Nagpur against indiscriminate Kunbi certificates, and police said a 40-year-old supporter traveling with Jarange died of a heart attack near Junnar.
