Police Launch Arson Inquiry After Blaze at Ellesmere Port Club

Firefighters have largely contained the blaze after overnight operations.

Overview

  • Nine fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were deployed when the fire broke out at the Groves Sports and Social Club on Chester Road at 6:45 pm on August 1
  • The blaze breached the roof and affected more than half the building, prompting crews to split the incident into sectors and focus on external attacks
  • By the morning of August 2, responders had scaled back to four fire engines and an aerial ladder platform as the fire was deemed largely contained
  • Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the structure to extinguish remaining pockets of fire with a lance
  • Cheshire Police are treating the incident as arson and have appealed for witnesses and any CCTV or dash-cam footage to support their investigation
