Overview
- In central Marseille, a Tunisian man in his mid-30s wounded five people during a brief rampage starting at a hotel from which he had been expelled for unpaid rent before police used a Taser and then fatally shot him at 15:26.
- The attacker carried two knives and a baton and, according to the prosecutor, shouted religious phrases during the assault; an IGPN inquiry was opened into the police use of firearms and a separate investigation for attempted homicide is underway.
- Authorities said he was not considered radicalized and had documented psychiatric and addiction problems, while PNAT has not taken the case.
- The man, identified in reports as Abdelkader D., had a recent criminal record including a May 2025 conviction for a knife attack on a relative and was awaiting appeal, and he was due in court over antisemitic remarks in Sète this summer.
- Separately, a 24-year-old remains in critical condition after a Nice stabbing with a 23-year-old suspect arrested on attempted homicide, and in Grenoble a 24-year-old baker was critically injured after confronting bread thieves, with investigations ongoing.
