Police Kill Knife Attacker in Central Marseille After Five Wounded

Prosecutors linked the stabbings to the suspect’s eviction from a central hotel over unpaid rent.

Overview

  • Prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said the assailant began the attack around 14:45 after being expelled from his hotel, stabbing a hotel occupant along with the manager and the manager’s son.
  • The suspect then moved onto Cours Belsunce into a nearby snack/fast-food area, where two more people were wounded and others were struck with a baton or iron bar.
  • Police ordered the man, who was carrying two knives, to drop his weapons; he refused and threatened officers, and was shot and declared dead at about 15:26.
  • Five victims were hospitalized with stab wounds, including one in critical condition and others seriously injured, according to the prosecutor.
  • Authorities identified the suspect as a Tunisian national legally in France, and investigators are reviewing CCTV and witness accounts as anti-terror prosecutors have not taken over the case; Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau planned to visit the scene.
