Police Kill Knife Attacker After Stabbings in Central Marseille

Prosecutors say investigators are not treating the case as terrorism.

Overview

  • Five people were injured in the attacks, including one victim in life-threatening condition, according to the Marseille prosecutor.
  • The assailant returned to a hotel from which he had been expelled for nonpayment and stabbed the room’s new occupant, the owner, and the owner’s son.
  • He then tried to attack patrons at a nearby fast-food shop and later injured two people with a baton on the pedestrian street Cours Belsunce.
  • Responding officers ordered him to drop two knives and a baton and shot him when he advanced toward them, with the confrontation captured in a video shared by Le Parisien.
  • Prosecutors identified him as a Tunisian born in 1990 who was legally residing in France, and investigators described him as confused as they examine his motive.
