Police Kill Knife Attacker After Hotel Eviction in Central Marseille

Prosecutors say terrorism is not indicated pending criminal and oversight reviews.

Overview

  • Prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said the assailant was a Tunisian man born in 1990 with legal residency and prior police records who had been expelled from a hotel for non-payment.
  • The attacker first stabbed the new occupant of his former room, then the hotel manager and the manager’s son, before targeting people in nearby streets and a bar near the Vieux-Port.
  • Officers confronted the man carrying two knives and a baton, ordered him to disarm, and fatally shot him when he refused and posed a threat.
  • Five people were injured, including one in critical condition, and the motive remains unclear as investigators currently do not treat the case as terrorism.
  • Judicial police opened a probe for attempted voluntary homicide, including against a police officer, while internal police services review the circumstances of the shooting.
