Police Investigate Two Midtown Subway Stabbings After Upper West Side Attack

Officials say overall transit crime sits near a 16-year low despite police hunting suspects in the latest cases.

Overview

  • A 38-year-old man was stabbed in the torso on a southbound 6 train at Grand Central around 5 p.m. Saturday, and police are searching for a suspect in gray clothing and a beanie.
  • A 15-year-old boy was slashed in the arm at the 42nd Street A/C/E stop at 6:11 p.m. Saturday by another teen in a brown jacket, police said.
  • On Friday around 7 p.m., a 23-year-old was stabbed in the back on the northbound 1 platform at 96th Street and Broadway after an argument; he was taken to Mt. Sinai–Morningside in stable condition and the knife was recovered.
  • Earlier this month, a 45-year-old man was stabbed in the back during a dispute on the L platform at Union Square during the morning rush, and he was hospitalized in stable condition as the attacker fled.
  • Police have not said whether the two back-stabbing cases are connected, and Gov. Kathy Hochul cites a 16-year low in subway crime and a $77 million commitment to keep NYPD officers in the system in 2026.
