Police Investigate Two Fatal Drownings at Carnival’s Celebration Key

Bahamian authorities have opened separate probes with autopsies set to establish how two cruise guests died in water emergencies at the new resort.

Overview

  • On Aug. 15, a 79-year-old American man became unresponsive while snorkeling at Celebration Key’s beach and a 74-year-old American woman collapsed in a pool about three hours later, with both victims pronounced dead after CPR efforts.
  • Carnival Cruise Line said its on-site lifeguards and medical teams responded promptly to each incident but were unable to revive the guests.
  • The two victims were traveling with their families on Carnival’s Mardi Gras and Carnival Elation ships, the company confirmed.
  • Celebration Key opened on July 19 as a $600 million private Bahamas resort exclusively for Carnival passengers, featuring freshwater lagoons, pools and a cruise pier.
  • The Royal Bahamas Police Force is leading investigations into both deaths and will perform autopsies while Carnival’s Care Team provides support to the victims’ families.
