Police Investigate Fatal Boat Collision at North Vancouver’s Cates Park

The speedboat driver remains in custody under RCMP investigation gathering witness videos to assess alcohol involvement or excessive speed in the collision

Overview

  • A speedboat struck an inflatable tube at Cates Park on June 7 around 6:30 p.m., killing an 11-year-old and critically injuring another child
  • North Vancouver RCMP arrested the speedboat operator at the scene and he remains in custody although no formal charges have been laid
  • Investigators are collecting video footage and interviewing witnesses to determine whether alcohol use or high speed contributed to the crash
  • Eight BC Emergency Health Services units, including a helicopter and infant care team, joined Canadian Coast Guard and Marine Search and Rescue crews in the response
  • Boating BC has issued warnings about sober operation, safe speeds and mandatory life-jacket use following the tragedy
