Overview
- Grand Rapids police publicly named 17-year-old Niles Murray as the victim of the Oct. 4 shooting.
- The gunfire erupted around 8:30 p.m. near Umatilla Street SE and Madison Avenue during a memorial for Amillier “Milli” Penn.
- The site is just feet from where 15-year-old Penn was killed in June 2024; a teen, Cartiyae Pascal, was charged in that earlier case.
- Investigators say the incident involved an exchange between groups with multiple shooters and estimates of 75 to 100 shell casings recovered.
- Chief Eric Winstrom said there is no evidence Murray was armed and called him a “true victim,” as police seek tips through GRPD and Silent Observer.
