Police Identify Man Killed in McDonald's Drive-Thru 'Freak Accident' in Nebraska

Investigators are reconstructing how the door interacted with the payment counter to trap 69-year-old Michael Dickinson at the Grand Island window.

  • Responders were dispatched at 10:23 a.m.; Dickinson was taken to CHI Health St. Francis, where he was pronounced dead.
  • Police said he had opened his door to reach the payment window, and Division Chief Dean Elliott described the incident as "100% a freak accident."
  • A McDonald’s employee who tried to help through the passenger side was injured and hospitalized, and is expected to recover.
  • The Grand Island Police Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting the ongoing investigation, officers cleared the scene in about two hours, and the drive-thru stayed open.
