Overview

• Two balaclava-clad attackers poured accelerant on the entrance and a parked car at Peacehaven Mosque late Saturday, starting a blaze as two men inside escaped without injury.
• Sussex Police launched Operation Spey and are investigating the offence as arson with intent to endanger life, releasing images from footage of two people approaching the door with accelerant.
• Officers highlighted distinctive clothing in the images, including a black jacket with a Pre London logo on the chest and bright red gloves, and urged anyone who recognises the suspects to come forward.
• The force asked residents to share CCTV, doorbell, dashcam or mobile footage from around Phyllis Avenue, instructing the public to quote Operation Spey when providing information.
• The mosque is closed for forensic work, patrols at places of worship have been increased, leaders condemned the attack, and police said the case is not currently being treated as terrorism.
