Police Fix Last Sighting of Melodee Buzzard to Oct. 9, Say Car’s Plate Was Swapped to Evade Detection

Detectives now seek surveillance from Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Southern California to close gaps in the Oct. 9–10 timeline.

Overview

  • Surveillance shows the 9-year-old with her mother near the ColoradoUtah border on Oct. 9 during the return leg of a three-day trip.
  • The rented 2024 white Chevrolet Malibu carried New York plate HCG9677 beginning Oct. 8 despite being assigned California plate 9MNG101, which was back on when the car was returned.
  • Investigators say the New York plate did not belong to the vehicle or to Ashlee Buzzard and was likely used to avoid detection.
  • Authorities released a route map and new images, believe the Malibu traveled through Green River and Panguitch in Utah, northwest Arizona, Primm in Nevada, and Rancho Cucamonga in California, and request tips or video from Oct. 9–10.
  • Ashlee returned to Lompoc on Oct. 10 without Melodee, has not cooperated with detectives, and searches of the home, a storage locker and the rental car were conducted with FBI assistance.
