Police Find More Than a Dozen Human Skulls in São Paulo Apartment

Police are pursuing forensic tests to confirm whether the seized remains were stolen from city cemeteries.

Overview

  • Officers discovered over 12 skulls and numerous other bones stored in boxes and bags inside a Jardim Paulista apartment, along with a sealed box and old photographs.
  • The residence belonged to a 79-year-old man who was found dead earlier in the week without signs of violence, according to police records.
  • Tools recovered at the scene, including digging equipment, led investigators to treat grave theft as the main line of inquiry, according to the Military Police.
  • The case was registered at the 78th Police District as encontro de cadáver and as crimes related to destruction, subtraction or concealment of a corpse.
  • All seized material was sent to the Institute of Criminalistics and the Medical Legal Institute for cataloging and identification to determine the remains’ origins.
