Police File Reckless Endangerment Complaint After Bystander Rescues Toddler From Hot Car in Hingham

The mother has not been formally charged.

Overview

  • A 22-month-old was found screaming and sweating in a parked car outside Whole Foods at the Derby Street Shops around 2:30 p.m. Monday, according to Hingham police.
  • A couple who parked next to the vehicle called 911, and one person climbed through the open sunroof to unlock the car and remove the child.
  • Officers placed the overheated toddler in an air-conditioned cruiser before paramedics transported the child to South Shore Hospital, and the child's condition was not released.
  • Police said the car’s windows were closed and the engine was off, with an outside temperature of about 73 degrees but a much hotter interior.
  • An application for a criminal complaint was filed in Hingham District Court against the 44-year-old Brockton mother, whose name is being withheld, after officers determined she had last checked the car about 20 minutes earlier.
