Police Confirm Vaughan Father Killed Confronting Intruders in Targeted Home Invasion

Police now believe the motive was monetary, with evidence under review for a possible link to a nearby break-in.

Overview

  • York Regional Police say 46-year-old Abdul Aleem Farooqi was shot after confronting three masked suspects who forced their way into his home shortly before 1 a.m. on Aug. 31.
  • Investigators describe the suspects as males in dark clothing who fled in a dark-coloured SUV after taking several family members’ phones, two of which were later recovered nearby.
  • Police are appealing for security video and witnesses, stressing that Farooqi, a father of four and local business owner, was not involved in criminal activity.
  • About 90 minutes later and roughly one kilometre away, three armed suspects attempted a separate home invasion captured on doorbell video; detectives have not determined if the cases are connected.
  • In a separate Markham case, two adults and two youths were arrested after a staged crash led to a kidnapping and home invasion in which a 54-year-old man was shot, with one teen on a prior release order and one adult released on bail.
