Police Authority Seeks to Strip Two Officers of Civil-Service Status Over 2020 Gevelsberg Shooting Exit

An appeals court’s milder 2022 verdict left the employment decision to Münster’s disciplinary chamber.

Overview

  • The Ennepe-Ruhr district police authority filed a disciplinary lawsuit late last year aiming to end the two officers’ civil-service status at the Administrative Court in Münster.
  • In May 2020, a driver reportedly under the influence opened fire during a traffic stop in Gevelsberg, with about 21 shots in roughly 20 seconds and one officer surviving a torso hit thanks to a bulletproof vest.
  • The two policewomen arrived on the scene, left without aiding colleagues, and later notified the control center, a course of action they defended in court as driven by fear of death.
  • The Landgericht Hagen in October 2022 convicted both of attempted dangerous bodily harm in office by omission and imposed four-month suspended sentences, after an earlier 12-month probation ruling in Schwelm that would have automatically cost them their jobs.
  • The officers were moved to internal duty and later suspended, and the Münster court says it generally does not comment on disciplinary cases as the decision on their employment remains pending.
