Police Ask Court to Examine Ex-IDF Legal Chief’s WhatsApp and Notes in Privilege Dispute

A judge will decide whether the disputed materials are protected by attorney-client privilege.

Overview

  • Israel Police filed on Monday to review a WhatsApp group between former Military Advocate General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi and her lawyers and to access notebooks found after she briefly went missing and was later located on a Tel Aviv beach.
  • Police say the chat, labeled “Yifat, Zamir, Daniel, attorney-client privilege,” was opened on October 31, printed, and submitted to the court solely for a confidentiality determination.
  • The request also covers a forensic extraction that includes correspondence between ex–chief military prosecutor Matan Solomash and attorney Avi Halabi, which his defense says is privileged.
  • Defense counsel argues all the materials are protected by attorney-client privilege and were previously placed in a sealed envelope under a court order.
  • The ruling will affect the closing phase of a high-profile probe tied to a leaked detainee-abuse video, as Police Commissioner Danny Levy has blocked public disclosure and delayed the investigation’s closure.
