Police Arrest Fourth Suspect in Gurugram Fake Child-Sex Case Extortion Racket

Investigators say the scheme weaponized fabricated abuse complaints to pressure husbands in marital disputes for money.

Overview

  • Police said Shivani Agarwal, the wife of an IT firm owner, was arrested for allegedly paying Rs 10 lakh to lawyer Geetika Chawla to frame her husband in a false rape case.
  • The case unraveled after an October 29 FIR was filed by aide Hanuman using a forged Aadhaar identity to allege a minor boy’s abduction and assault, which investigators later deemed fabricated.
  • Earlier this week, police arrested Chawla, her husband Harsh Kumar Thakkar, and Hanuman; a court granted seven-day police custody for the couple and five days for Hanuman.
  • A 16-hour raid at the couple’s Sector 72 flat recovered Rs 1.14 crore in cash, gold jewellery worth about Rs 2.85 crore, multiple devices, SIM cards and forged identification documents.
  • A special investigation team is examining dozens of phones and more than 100 numbers, is reopening two earlier similar cases in Gurugram and Faridabad, and has booked the accused under BNS sections and Section 22 of the POCSO Act.
