Police Arrest Cousin in Murder of Surat Toddler Found in Train Lavatory at Mumbai LTT

A joint Surat team tracked the suspect through CCTV and a phone location alert before catching him after a brief chase, officials said.

  • Cleaning staff at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus found the three-year-old’s body hidden in the dustbin of AC coach B2 of the Kushinagar Express during post-arrival cleaning early Saturday.
  • The victim was identified as Akash (Aarav) Shah from Amroli, Surat, whose mother had filed a kidnapping complaint on August 21 naming his cousin Vikas as the suspect.
  • Post-mortem and forensic reports indicated a fatal sharp-injury to the neck and ruled out sexual assault, prompting police to upgrade the case to murder.
  • CCTV and technical evidence showed the accused with the child at Surat railway station and later in Mumbai at Dadar and LTT as GRP, RPF and railway crime teams coordinated the probe.
  • Mid-day reports the accused, identified as Vikas (25–26), was apprehended in Surat after a location ping from Mumbai’s BKC led to a one-kilometre chase, and investigators are still probing the motive.
