Police Arrest 66 at Silent Palestine Action Protest Outside Labour Conference

The detentions highlight the UK's first use of terrorism law against a non-violent protest network.

Overview

  • Merseyside Police said 66 people were detained near the Liverpool conference venue, with two de-arrested and 64 held on suspicion of displaying support for a proscribed organisation under the Terrorism Act.
  • Those arrested were aged between 21 and 83 and have been released on bail following the Sunday demonstration.
  • About 100 people took part in the silent action organised by Defend Our Juries, holding signs that read, “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.”
  • The arrests add to a nationwide wave since the July proscription, bringing the total to nearly 1,700 detained for alleged support of Palestine Action, with about 138 charged.
  • Amnesty International criticised the policing as disproportionate, and Palestine Action’s legal challenge to the ban remains pending after government opposition to its appeal bid.
