Polar Air Ends Mild Spell as DWD Warns of Frost, Ice and Snow Across Germany

DWD alerts highlight frost and slippery roads with polar air entrenched over the country.

Overview

  • First snow was reported in higher terrain including the Taunus (Feldberg), Wasserkuppe, the Bavarian Forest and Alpine foothills, as well as parts of the Sauerland and Harz.
  • Alpine and high-mountain areas are forecast to see the most accumulation, with DWD expecting locally up to around 20 centimeters in western Alpine groups and 1–5 centimeters in the southern foreland.
  • DWD issued regional warnings for frost and glätte, including Nordhessen through Tuesday morning and parts of NRW on Monday, as subzero nights raise the risk of icy roads.
  • Short-term forecasts call for rain in lowlands and snow above roughly 400–600 meters, daytime highs mostly 2–8°C, and nighttime lows down to 0 to −7°C in the southeast.
  • Cold air over the North and Baltic Seas could trigger localized lake-effect snow bands on Tuesday, and forecasters note model disagreement on lowland snow with broad 20-centimeter totals dismissed as exaggerated.
