Poland Shoots Down Drones in Its Airspace as NATO Holds Article 4 Talks

NATO consultations opened following the intercepts, with responsibility and flight paths under investigation.

Overview

  • Poland reported 19 incursions during Russia’s overnight strike on Ukraine and said multiple drones that posed a direct threat were downed, with no casualties confirmed.
  • Allied air assets supported the operation, including Polish F-16s, Dutch F-35s, Italian early warning aircraft and a NATO tanker, in what NATO called its first engagement with potential threats in allied airspace.
  • Polish authorities temporarily closed parts of the airspace and several airports, and officials are surveying debris sites after damage to a house and a car in the Lublin region.
  • Warsaw said some drones entered from Belarus; Moscow denied targeting Poland, and Belarus claimed drones went off course due to jamming, while evidence collection continues.
  • Prime Minister Donald Tusk invoked NATO’s Article 4 for urgent consultations, allied leaders condemned the violations, and regional forces remain on heightened alert ahead of RussiaBelarus drills.
