Poland Plans €2 Billion Anti-Drone Defenses Along Eastern Border

EU SAFE financing underpins a phased rollout targeting first capabilities within six months.

Overview

  • Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk said initial capabilities are expected in about six months, with full buildout targeted in 24 months.
  • The layered system will be integrated into an existing line of defense created about a decade ago and will combine machine guns, cannons, missiles and drone-jamming technology.
  • Some weaponry will be activated only under wartime conditions, according to Tomczyk.
  • Project costs will exceed €2 billion, funded mainly through the EU’s SAFE credit instrument with a smaller share from the state budget.
  • Authorities have begun installing anti-drone equipment on observation towers and plan logistics centers in each border municipality for rapid deployment.
