Poland Downs Drones Over Its Territory in First Direct Engagement of War

Warsaw calls the overnight airspace violations during Russia’s strike on Ukraine its first engagement of hostile drones in NATO airspace.

Overview

  • Poland’s Operational Command said drones repeatedly crossed its border and that weapons were used, with ground teams now searching for debris and residents in Podlaskie, Mazowieckie and Lublin told to stay home.
  • Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said more than 10 objects entered Polish airspace and reported that Polish and allied aircraft engaged, thanking NATO Air Command and Dutch F-35s for support.
  • NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said numerous drones entered Polish airspace and were met by Polish and NATO air defences, while Prime Minister Donald Tusk briefed Secretary General Mark Rutte and convened an emergency cabinet meeting.
  • The U.S. FAA reported temporary suspensions at four airports, including Warsaw Chopin and Rzeszów–Jasionka; Chopin later said airspace above the airport reopened but warned of delays.
  • Poland will shut its border with Belarus at midnight Thursday for the Zapad-2025 drills, as EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said initial indications suggest the incursions were intentional and Russia offered no immediate comment.
