Point Break’ Writer Responds After James Cameron Says He Was Denied Credit

The credited screenwriter says a WGA jury awarded him the screenplay, acknowledging Cameron’s uncredited additions.

Overview

  • Peter Iliff told People that the Writers Guild arbitration granted him sole screenplay credit on the 1991 film, with shared story credit with Rick King.
  • Iliff said James Cameron contributed several scenes as executive producer but that the work did not meet the WGA threshold for a screenwriting credit.
  • Iliff praised Cameron’s contributions and described him as a hero, adding that there is “enough glory for everybody.”
  • Cameron recently told The Hollywood Reporter he wrote Point Break and claimed he was “stiffed” by the WGA, comments made during promotion for Avatar: Fire and Ash.
  • Official credits remain unchanged, listing Iliff for the screenplay and Cameron as executive producer, on the Kathryn Bigelow–directed film starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.
