Overview

  • Elections Canada will validate the result on Saturday and issue a certificate before he is sworn in, with Parliament scheduled to resume Sept. 15.
  • The seat was vacated by Conservative MP Damien Kurek, who won about 83% in April before stepping aside so Poilievre could run.
  • Most of the 214 candidates were linked to the Longest Ballot Committee, prompting the first federal use of blank write-in ballots and early counting procedures.
  • Preliminary tallies put Poilievre near 80% in the longtime Conservative stronghold despite local criticism from opponents who labeled him a parachute candidate.
  • The win returns the Opposition leader to the House floor to face Prime Minister Mark Carney in Question Period and precedes a party leadership review in January.
