Pogacar Defends World Title With 104-Kilometer Attack in Kigali

The first Road World Championships in Africa finished on a course so hard only 30 men reached the line.

Overview

  • Tadej Pogacar went clear on Mont Kigali with 104 km remaining, rode the final 66 km alone, and beat Remco Evenepoel by 1:28, with Ben Healy taking bronze.
  • Isaac del Toro briefly accompanied the move before dropping, while Evenepoel recovered from early losses and two bike changes to secure second.
  • The 267 km route with roughly 5,500 meters of climbing caused exceptional attrition: 30 finishers from 165 starters, and Julian Alaphilippe abandoned after about 30 km with suspected food poisoning.
  • Canada’s Magdeleine Vallières won the women’s race from a 10‑rider break ahead of Niamh Fisher‑Black and Mavi Garcia, as favorites marked each other and Pauline Ferrand‑Prévot finished 16th.
  • Organisers and the UCI praised a milestone African staging, with the federation estimating roughly one million spectators along the course.
