POCSO Courts Nationwide Issue Life Terms in Fast-Tracked Child Rape Cases

The latest sentences cap a week of fast-track prosecutions that paired swift charge-sheets with compensation orders for survivors.

Overview

  • West Bengal: A Barasat POCSO court sentenced toto driver Soumitra Roy to life imprisonment for the February 7 Newtown rape-murder, concluding the case in seven months on medical, digital, technical and biological evidence, with his lawyer indicating an appeal.
  • Odisha: A Berhampur POCSO court gave Kalia Nahak rigorous life imprisonment for raping and murdering his five-year-old niece, ordered Rs 5 lakh compensation via the DLSA, filed the charge-sheet in 50 days and secured conviction within four months.
  • Telangana: A Nalgonda court sentenced Shaik alias Mohammed Khayyum to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under the POCSO Act for a 2021 assault, imposed fines and directed Rs 7 lakh compensation to the victim through the District Legal Services Authority.
  • Andhra Pradesh: The Chittoor POCSO court ordered life imprisonment till the end of their natural life for Chittoor Venkatesh and Bukke Rajamohan Naik for a 2019 rape near Tirupati, along with fines and Rs 3 lakh compensation to the survivor.
  • Tripura: A special court gave Samir Naha life imprisonment for repeatedly raping a 14-year-old, sentenced the victim’s mother and sister to 10 years each for facilitating the abuse, and in a separate case awarded 10-year terms to two neighbours for raping a 13-year-old.
