PMO Orders Crackdown on Polluting Vehicles, Speeds Push for EVs in Delhi-NCR

Central oversight tightens following weeks of very poor to severe air in Delhi-NCR.

Overview

  • Bordering states were told to deploy ANPR, RFID and integrated traffic management systems and to intensify checks on high-emitting, non-compliant vehicles.
  • Officials flagged Delhi’s outsized vehicle load and noted that about 37% of NCR vehicles still meet only BS I–III norms, based on VAHAN data.
  • Authorities plan to revise EV policies, expand charging networks, launch a unified monitoring portal and notify cab and bike aggregator rules, with MoRTH asked to fast-track a scientific study on fossil-fuel vehicle pollution.
  • Air quality remains in the very poor to hazardous range with citywide readings above 350 and some localities over 450, and CAQM has kept GRAP Stage 3 active.
  • Public and private offices were instructed to stagger work hours with at least half of staff working from home, while focus on transport grows as stubble-burning incidents hit a five-year low.
