Overview
- PML-N formally awarded party tickets to seven reserved-seat hopefuls on Wednesday, August 19, with party supremo Nawaz Sharif personally interviewing candidates in Murree and signing the nomination letters.
- The party nominated Maryam Zaman, Maryam Idrees, Sehrish Qamar and Riffat Abid for women’s seats, Abdul Rehman Arain for the overseas Kashmiris seat, Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani for the technocrat seat, and Maulana Mazhar Saeed for the Ulema and Mashaikh seat.
- The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission set the timetable for the process with nomination papers due on August 20, the final candidate list published on August 23, and polling for all eight reserved seats scheduled for August 24 at the AJK Legislative Assembly.
- Because seven territorial constituency polls were postponed for security reasons, only the 38 directly elected members currently seated will vote on August 24, and if PML-N wins the projected allocations and secures support from Sajid Iqbal Abbasi its seat total could rise to about 32.
- The outcome will determine who forms the next AJK government and highlights centralized decision making inside PML-N by top leaders, a development that could shape the territory’s policy direction once the reserved-seat results are certified.
